Empowering Women through Financial Inclusion

The International Child Development Programme (ICDP) Ghana continues to empower women in rural communities through the Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) initiative. The programme seeks to strengthen women’s financial independence, promote cooperation, and support sustainable community development.

Programme Implementation

In the Otwetiri community within the Akuapem North Municipality, ICDP Ghana supported women through targeted capacity-building activities, including:

- Training on savings culture
- Effective financial management skills
- Access to soft loans
- Promotion of mutual support and cooperation

These interventions have enhanced women’s ability to manage household finances, invest in small businesses, and support one another both economically and socially.

VSLA Groups in Otwetiri

The formation of sub-groups in the VSLA programme has helped to develop leadership skills, strengthen accountability, enhance unity, improve participation, and promote savings discipline and loan repayment among members.

In Otwetiri, the VSLA programme is implemented through the following sub groups:

- Victory Group
- Peace and Love Group
- God is Good Group

These groups serve as platforms for collective savings, access to loans, and mutual support among women.

The VSLA initiative provides multiple benefits to women, including:

- Financial inclusion for women with limited access to formal banking services.
- Access to soft loans for income-generating activities and household needs.
- Enhanced household welfare and resilience to economic crises.

Importance of Setting Sub-Groups within the VSLA

To strengthen effectiveness and participation, the VSLA programme encourages the formation of small or sub-groups within the main VSLA groups. These sub-groups:

- Improve group management and coordination
- Increased confidence and leadership skills, promoting active participation and inclusion.
- Strengthen accountability, transparency, and trust.
- Enhanced savings discipline and loan repayment among VSLA participants.
- Provide closer peer support and monitoring.
- Improve sustainability and growth of the VSLA.

VSLA Share-Out / End-of-Cycle Activities

The VSLA cycle from January to December concluded with a successful share-out ceremony, celebrating disciplined saving, teamwork, and collective effort. ICDP Ghana supported the activity at Otwetiri, bringing together members of Victory, Peace and Love, and God is Good VSLA groups. The celebration highlighted profit sharing, community growth, and strengthened economic resilience.

The VSLA programme continues to empower women socially and economically, fostering stronger households and resilient communities through collective savings and shared responsibility.
